Physical Education – A Core Part of Our Curriculum

We believe that high-quality Physical Education is an essential part of a child's education. PE is not simply about playing sport; it is about developing physical competence, confidence, teamwork, resilience, healthy habits and a lifelong enjoyment of being active.

Our PE curriculum is designed to give every child the opportunity to learn, practise, compete, perform and improve. We want our children to leave us physically confident, equipped with a broad range of skills and with the knowledge and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.

Our approach reflects the aims of the national curriculum, which places an emphasis on developing competence across a broad range of physical activities, sustained physical activity, competitive sport and healthy, active lifestyles.

🏅 Specialist Teaching & High Expectations

We are proud to have dedicated sports coaches working alongside our teaching staff to deliver high-quality PE.

This additional expertise enables our children to benefit from specialist coaching while ensuring that PE remains an integral part of our curriculum. Our staff work alongside coaches to develop their own knowledge and confidence, ensuring that the quality of PE is sustained across the school.

We have high expectations for every child. Whether a pupil is developing their fundamental movement skills, learning a new sport, preparing for competition or working towards their personal best, we want every child to experience success, challenge and progress.

    🏊 Swimming & Water Safety

Swimming is a particularly important part of our PE offer.

Every child from Year 3 to Year 6 has weekly swimming lessons, giving our pupils sustained opportunities to develop their swimming ability, water confidence and water safety.

This goes beyond simply providing an occasional block of swimming. We believe that regular teaching and practice gives children the opportunity to develop, refine and retain an essential life skill.

The national curriculum expects pupils to develop competence and confidence in swimming, including swimming at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively and learning safe self-rescue.

We are incredibly proud that our children have also achieved success in swimming galas, demonstrating the impact of our commitment to swimming and competitive sport.

⚽ Sport Beyond the PE Lesson

Our commitment to physical activity does not stop when the PE lesson ends.

We provide a range of free after-school sports clubs, ensuring that children have additional opportunities to practise their skills, discover new interests and enjoy being active with their friends.

Our playground has a designated football and netball area, giving children opportunities to be active and practise their skills during their own time.

We also have an outdoor gym and trim trail, encouraging children to develop strength, stamina, balance, coordination and physical confidence throughout the school day.

We want physical activity to be part of everyday school life, not something that only happens during PE lessons.

    🏆 Competition & Excellence

We believe that competition has an important place within PE.

Our children regularly represent the school in sporting competitions and have achieved success in swimming and athletics competitions.

We also take part in KS1 multi-skills and inclusion competitions, ensuring that competitive opportunities are accessible to a broad range of pupils.

For us, competition is not simply about winning. It teaches children how to prepare, perform, persevere, respond to success and disappointment, work as part of a team and show respect for others.

We celebrate personal bests and individual improvement alongside competitive success.

    💃 Dance & Performance

Our PE curriculum extends beyond traditional team sports.

Our children take part in the annual Dance Fever showcase at our local high school, giving them the opportunity to develop movement, rhythm, coordination, creativity and performance skills.

Dance provides an important opportunity for children to express themselves physically and creatively, while developing confidence and discipline.

    🏏 Developing Sporting Expertise

We are particularly fortunate to have a member of staff who is a Qualified Cricket Coach.

This enables us to draw on specialist expertise within our own school community and provide children with opportunities to develop their cricket skills, knowledge and understanding.

We also take part in annual tennis competitions in Liverpool, broadening the range of sports our children experience and giving them opportunities to compete beyond the school environment.

Our children therefore encounter a wide variety of individual and team sports, developing transferable skills that they can apply across different activities.

    🤝 PE for Every Child

We are committed to ensuring that PE is inclusive and ambitious for all.

Our participation in KS1 multi-skills and inclusion competitions reflects our belief that every child should have the opportunity to be active, develop physical skills and experience the sense of belonging that comes from representing their school.

We recognise that children have different starting points, interests and strengths. Our aim is not for every child to become a competitive athlete; it is for every child to become physically confident and to find forms of activity that they enjoy and can sustain throughout their lives.

    🌟 Our PE Ambition

Our ambition is for every child to leave our school:

    🏃 Physically confident
    💪 Resilient and determined
🤝 Able to work effectively with others
    🏆 Comfortable with competition
    🏊 Confident in the water
❤️ Understanding the importance of an active lifestyle
🎯 Motivated to improve and achieve their personal best

We want our children to understand that PE is not just something they do at school — being active is an important part of a healthy and fulfilling life.

Through specialist coaching, high-quality teaching, regular swimming, competitive opportunities, inclusive events, clubs and excellent sporting facilities, we are committed to developing confident, capable and enthusiastic young people who enjoy being active and understand the value of sport throughout their lives.
