PE

Physical Education – A Core and Highly Valued Subject

At our school, Physical Education is a core and highly valued part of our curriculum. We believe that high-quality PE develops much more than physical skills: it builds confidence, resilience, teamwork, determination and a positive attitude towards lifelong health and wellbeing. We want every child to discover the joy of being active, to recognise their own strengths and talents, and to have opportunities to participate, compete and succeed.

Our children benefit from a rich and varied programme of sporting experiences, both within school and through our links with the wider community. We actively encourage participation in competitive sport and are proud to represent our school in a range of events.

Our pupils regularly take part in swimming galas held in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, providing an exciting opportunity to compete in a high-quality sporting environment. We are particularly proud that three of our children have been identified and scouted for local swimming teams, demonstrating the sporting talent and potential that our pupils are able to develop.

Athletics is another important part of our sporting offer. Each year, our children participate in the prestigious annual athletics competition at Robin Park, competing alongside pupils from other schools. Our children have achieved notable success, including one pupil who set a record in the shot put competition – an achievement that reflects the determination, commitment and sporting ambition we encourage in every child.

We are equally committed to ensuring that sport is inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Through our partnership with SHARES Lancashire, our children have opportunities to take part in inclusive sporting competitions and activities, enabling pupils of different abilities to experience the excitement and sense of achievement that comes from representing their school and being part of a team.

Our PE provision is further strengthened by a specialist PE coach who delivers lessons in school, supporting high-quality teaching and helping to develop pupils' skills, knowledge and confidence across a range of sporting disciplines.

Swimming is an important element of our curriculum. Children in Key Stage 2 attend swimming throughout the year, developing water confidence, swimming competence and essential water-safety skills. We see swimming as an important life skill as well as a sporting opportunity.

Our commitment to physical development also extends beyond traditional competitive sport. Through Dance Fever, our children develop coordination, rhythm, creativity and confidence before performing their routines in front of a live audience. These experiences encourage children to take pride in their achievements, work collaboratively and perform with confidence.

Through our PE curriculum and wider sporting opportunities, we aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to be active, to participate, to compete, to perform and to discover what they can achieve. We celebrate individual achievement alongside teamwork and participation, nurturing children who are confident, resilient and enthusiastic about physical activity.

PE is not an add-on at our school; it is an integral part of our curriculum and our wider commitment to developing healthy, confident and well-rounded children.
