Our reading journey at West End starts with a solid foundation of Phonics teaching. This starts in EYFS and continues into KS1. We base our teaching around Twinkl Phonics and use the resources from Twinkl which gives us fidelity to the scheme. As well as a daily 30 minute Phonics lesson, phonics activities are available in Continuous Provision in both EYFS and Year 1. Phonics is an essential part of the learning journey at West End leading to excellence in reading.

WEST END WONDERS!

This year we have introduced West End Wonders- a challenge for all pupils in which magical collection of books suitable for each year group have been chosen to read.

Our pupils are encouraged to read the books over the course of the year and collect stamps for all they read. To promote our focus on oracy we expect the children to give a verbal review of the books they read- it could be a reading of their favourite excerpt; a recommendation; a description of their favourite character or event... anything that gets us talking and sharing our love of great books! We can't wait to hear what everybody thinks.
