Governors

School governors form the largest volunteer group in the country.
They are people from all walks of life, who care about children's education
and are prepared to work as a team to support their school & local community.
If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please talk to either Mr Clarke or
Mrs Cartwright, as they can let you know if there are any upcoming vacancies.

     Phil Clarke

Committees As Headteacher, Phil has a mandate to sit on most Committees.
Biographical Information

Phil is an experienced educator. He has worked in a variety of Primary Schools in Lancashire. He completed his initial teacher training at Edge Hill College in 1996 and completed a 2 year course (L.P.P.H.) to prepare for headship in June 2014. He has worked in a variety of Year groups and held a number of subject leadership responsibilities. Since retiring from playing rugby for Chorley RUFC, he has coached the Under 8's Tag Rugby Team; purchased a motorbike and completed numerous D.I.Y. projects.

   Anne Bragg

Committees Anne sits on the Curriculum Committee which monitors, discusses and reviews curriculum policies and provision. After meeting with their subject leader staff member, curriculum governors report their findings back to the committee.
Biographical Information

Anne attended West End Primary as a pupil and currently has a child in the school. Anne is an active member for the 'Friends of West End', she serves on the committee as joint secretary, volunteers in Beech Class on a weekly basis and can often be found helping in and around school.

Committees Gareth sits on the Resources Committee, which considers things such as finance, staffing & building matters. Gareth also sits on the Curriculum Committee and as the Link Governor he co-ordinates training for our Board of Governors.
Biographical Information

Gareth currently has a child at West End School. He has worked in construction management for over 20 years and brings his extensive skills & knowledge to our Governing Body.

    Mike Fairhurst
  (Vice Chair of the Board of Governors)

Committees Mike sits on the Curriculum Committee which monitors, discusses and reviews curriculum policies and provision. As Literacy Governor, Mike meets with the subject leader & report his findings back to the committee. Mike also sits on the Standards & Effectiveness Committee which meets termly to monitor and evaluate the achievements of the school and the quality of education it provides.
Biographical Information

Mike is a Fire Officer for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, with over 14 years’ experience.  Many years ago Mike attended West End Primary School as a pupil and his daughter also attended the school.  Mike is a big sports fan and he is also a keen supporter of the ‘Friends’ committee

Biographical Information Lucy has two daughters at West End. She is an active member of the 'Friends' committee and previously came into school on a regular basis to listen to and encourage children's reading.  Lucy's background is in healthcare in which she has worked both privately & within the NHS.

Sophie McInnes

Biographical Information Sophie has been part of the West End team, firstly as a volunteer and now as a Teaching Assistant, for 10 years. She works alongside teachers in the classoom to deliver the school's curriculum and with children to ensure they reach their full potential.

    Barbara Stevens
    (Chair of the Board of Governors) 

Category of Governor/Term of Office LA Governor approved by the Governing Body on 29 March 2016 until March 2020.
Designated Governor Role Chair of the Governing Body, Inclusion Governor & designated governor for SEND & Pupil Premium.
Committees Barbara is the chairperson of the Resources Committee and sits on the Standards & Effectiveness Committee which interrogates the school assessment data in order to maintain high standards and high expectations of all pupil achievements.
Biographical Information

Barbara was a teacher for over 35 years and retired after 26 as a headteacher, 21 of them at a local school. She has a wide knowledge of education having taught across the whole primary age range. She has links with Edge Hill university and coordinates a school direct teacher training cluster. She enjoys music and is a supporter of The Liverpool Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, her other interests include walking and reading as well as spending time with her two grandsons

Biographical Information

Kim currently works at Edge Hill University on European-funded projects working with small businesses in Lancashire. She has over twenty years-experience championing consumer rights and environmental issues, both in Westminster and Brussels. Kim also trained as a fundraiser for YWCA in Oxford & previously served as a parent governor at Red Hill secondary school in the West Midlands until 2012. Interests include art and culture, ancient history, European film, and music, from Pet Shop Boys to Mozart.
